Objectives of the program (competence)

The goal of the programme is to train specialists who will be ready to solve professional tasks in the field of socio-economic and ecological rural development, to manage the relevant departments of different services and organizations, to apply knowledge in a specific situation, taking into account the features of the localagriculture and rural development.

The SARUD Applied Master’s Programme “Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development” is developed with regard to all components of sustainable development, including academic disciplines of economic, social and institutional content, the courses of the ecological well-being of rural areas, as well as current trends in the development of agriculture.

Students learn to apply modern methods of integrated assessment of rural development, to design and implement municipal programs for sustainable development of rural areas, to use innovative methods in the management of rural development.

In the end of the Program, the students are equipped with following competencies:

  • An ability for abstract thinking, analysis, and synthesis;
  • An ability to summarize and critically evaluate the results obtained by national and foreign researchers, to identify promising areas, to develop a research programme;
  • Readiness to lead a team in their professional activities taking social, ethnic, religious and cultural differences in a non-judgmental manner;
  • An ability to justify the relevance and the theoretical and practical significance of the chosen topic of research;
  • An ability to present results of carried out research to the scientific community in the form of an article or report;
  • An ability to independently perform tasks and to develop design solutions taking into account uncertainties, to develop appropriate methodological and regulatory documents, as well as proposals and activities for implementation of the programmes and projects developed;
  • An ability to evaluate the effectiveness of projects, taking into account the uncertainty factor;
  • An ability to develop strategies of behaviour of economic agents in different markets;
  • An ability to prepare analytical materials for evaluation of economic policy activities and for strategic decision-making at the micro- and macro-levels;
  • An ability to analyze and use various sources of information for economic calculation;
  • An ability to forecast the main socio-economic indicators of an enterprise, an industry sector, a region and economy on the whole;
  • An ability to manage economic services and departments in private enterprises or organizations and in national and local public bodies;
  • An ability to develop options for management decisions and to justify their choice based on criteria of social and economic efficiency;
  • the ability to apply ecological and biological technologies of agriculture, which allow to optimize the parameters of agricultural production and to improve the quality of regional food products and services;
  • the ability to develop options for management decisions and to justify their choice based on the principles of conservation and rational use of the local bio-resources

Content of the program

The Master’s program is aimed at practical education in the field of sustainable agriculture and rural development, is an interdisciplinary program at the interface between economics, ecology, social sphere and management, agronomy and technology of livestock production. The interdisciplinary programme at BSAA was developed in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders, including: Peoples Khural of the Republic of Buryatia, the department of rural development and small business of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Buryatia, LLC “ZHASSO-TOUR”. The combination of expertise in the basic pillars of sustainable agriculture and rural development ensures a truly complete and balanced learning experience.

After graduation from the graduate program, graduates will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and make management decisions in the field of agricultural and rural development taking into account local conditions. Graduates of the program can work in the bodies of state and municipal management, organizations and departments of agriculture at various levels, in research institutes, in educational organizations of higher and secondary vocational education. The program is designed for 120 ECTS. Courses are offered as a part time program (2.5 years). The graduates receive a state diploma with the qualification “Master of Science in Public administration”. The Master program provides (optionally) academic mobility and training for 1 semester in one of the partner universities of Russia and Kazakhstan.

Professional and practical experience (practice-oriented training)

All students will have opportunities to gain industrial and practical experiences. Teaching visits will be made to the Centre of Aquaculture, Laboratory of Game Management, Centre of Landscape design and Centre of Innovative Farming in order to show practical link with theoretical material (each university adds practical organizations from practical components). You will gain specialised experience in practical science or policy making through a dissertation or project placement with external agencies.

Acceptance of applications:

  • from June 20 to July 20 (full-time education),
  • from 20 June to 13 October (extramural studies)

Documents for admission:

– statement;

– a document proving the identity and citizenship;

– the original of the document of education or its photocopy;

– two photographs of 3×4 (matte, identical);

– other documents may be provided to applicants if they are applying for benefits established by the legislation of the Russian Federation;

– the application for admission may also be accompanied by documents, the provision of which meets the interests of the applicants themselves (certificates, certificates);

– A copy of the certificate of marriage (or change of name).
